Mo & Christine welcomed our Mayor, John Tory, to talk about The Original Santa Claus Parade being virtual this year.

Since 1905, The Original Santa Claus Parade has kicked off the Christmas season in Toronto – and their plans, like yours, have changed.  But the Parade will still go on!

In the spirit of a safe holiday season, the annual parade is moving to a 2-hour primetime broadcast celebration!  It will happen this Saturday, December 5th at 7pm on CTV & CTV2.

Watch the parade from home and look for our 98.1 CHFI float!

DARREN & MO INTERVIEW: Food and Lifestyle Expert PAY CHEN

Mo & Christine welcomed back Pay Chen (@PayChen on IG and Twitter) to continue her tips for Alternative Gift-Giving.

People will be shopping online more than ever this year. While the big companies are well-known and easy; let’s try to support the smaller, local, Canadian businesses and consider those who will be having a tougher holiday this year.

  1. FoodShare’s Holiday Gift Box: this local organization helps feed people who need it with their multiple food programs. They have affordable produce box subscriptions (serving the Toronto area) and try to make healthy food accessible to everyone. (Community gardens, kids cooking programs, providing healthy food to those who can not afford it etc..)

For the holidays they put together a limited number of HOLIDAY GIFT BOXES full of delicious treats delivered in the Toronto area.  $90 The perfect gift or corporate gift that gives to the recipient but also helps FoodShare continue their work of providing programs to underserved communities. This is a gift that supports the community. https://goodfoodbox.foodshare.net

  1. Support local restaurants by buying a gift card. Either purchase directly or consider Rally for Restaurants – it’s an online initiative that launched during the pandemic to support bars and restaurants with a gift card program. This gives restaurants money right away and the consumer can redeem the card when restaurants re-open or use it immediately if they offer takeout.

Any restaurant can sign up to register. You purchase a gift card for $25 or $50 and Stella Artois adds $10 to the value of the gift card…so it’s free money.

The beauty is over 1000 restaurants across Canada have registered so you can purchase a gift card to gift to someone who lives in another city or province.

  1. Helping Toronto seniors during COVID. The city of Toronto has a link where you can donate and all of the money goes towards items for Long Term Care homes: things like small gifts, acquiring technology that lets residents stay in touch with family, special holiday programming and items. Since we’re not seeing as many people in person – make a donation in lieu of a gift and know that you’re making the holidays brighter for someone who really needs it.

Darren & Mo talked with Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, who plays Appa on the hit CBC Show, Kim’s Convenience. Now in Season 5.

  • Kim’s Convenience, the funny, heartfelt story of the Kim family and their downtown Toronto convenience store, returns for a fifth season.
  • While they shot the season through Covid, it is not reflected in the show.
  • Paul has won two Canadian Screen Awards for his role as Appa. During his acceptance speech 3 years ago he spoke about inclusivity:

“Representation matters…because when people see themselves reflected up on the screens, it is an inspiring and a very powerful moment for them. Because it means they’ve moved from the margins into the forefront. It gives them a voice. It gives them hope. Hope is a very empowering thing because it inspires people. When you give people a voice, other people start listening. When people start listening, things start to change.”

A few weeks ago, 9 year-old Eva played The Quizzle with us and asked 3 pretty tough hockey questions. She was obviously hockey-obsessed…and we found out she’s a big Auston Matthews fan.

We thought it would be fun to check in with her throughout the season to talk a little hockey and get her take on the Maple Leafs.

Eva has her own YouTube channel called “Hockey drills with Eva” where she posts videos like:

  • How to tape your stick
  • How to toe drag
  • Cool hockey moves
  • Fun Facts about Wayne Gretzky

Mo & Christine welcomed 7-year-old Alex (who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy before he was 2 years old) and  his mom, Sarah to the show.

  • Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital is Canada’s largest children’s rehabilitation hospital – and we’re so lucky it’s located right here in Toronto.
  • Every year, the Centre helps 7,000 kids with disabilities smile, laugh, learn and heal!
  • All this week, fundraisers across Canada are wearing superhero capes as a visual cue to spark conversation around childhood disability and inclusion.
  • This week, Holland Bloorview kicks off its 5th annual Capes for Kids fundraising campaign.

DARREN & MO INTERVIEW – Alan Doyle

Darren & Mo spoke with Alan Doyle about his new book, “All Together Now: A Newfoundlander’s Light Tales for Heavy Times“

He describes it as a book of random short stories that are funny and self-deprecating – some from his childhood, some from touring around the world, some from fatherhood…every chapter starts with kind of a scene in a pub and then it leads into a story from there. Being off the road, he’s spent more days at home than he has since he was a child. He misses the crowds and companionship of performing. He misses gathering at the pub, where one yarn follows another so quickly, “you have to be as ready as an Olympian at the start line to get your tale in before someone is well into theirs already.”

All Together Now is a pub gathering in book form – all designed to put a smile on your face.  Stories include:

  • Adventures in foreign lands, including an apparently filthy singalong in Polish (well, he would have sung along if he’d understood the language)
  • A real-life ghost story involving an elderly neighbour
  • A red convertible and a clown horn
  • Meeting Anne Murray at a Grey Cup party
