Cereals No One Likes Any More.

Corn Flakes

Company: Kellogg
Introduced: 1894
12-month sales, through April: $107 million
Change during that period: -5.86%
Decline in sales from 2007 to 2010: 3.8%

Cheerios

Company: General Mills
Introduced: 1941
12-month sales, through April: $282 million
Change during that period: -3.86%
Decline in sales from 2007 to 2010: 6.9%

Raisin Bran

Company: Kellogg
Introduced: 1926
12-month sales, through April: $115 million
Change during that period: -8.4%
Decline in sales from 2007 to 2010: 7.9%

Raisin Bran is the victim of its own success, having spawned legions of knock-off brands. Many of them are made by private-label makers and sold for a fraction of the cost of the original. Price-conscious consumers probably can’t tell the difference.

Rice Krispies

Company: Kellogg
Introduced: 1928
12-month sales through April: $121 million
Change during that period: -8.7%
Decline in sales from 2007 to 2010: 10.3%

Corn Pops

Company: Kellogg
Introduced: 1951
12-month sales, through April: $73.8 million
Change during that period: -19%
Decline in sales from 2007 to 2010: 12.8%

Corn Pops are a tough sell. Many parents are not thrilled when their children ingest sugary cereals. Adults are also shunning the sugary cereal.

Special K

Company: Kellogg
Introduced: 1956
12-month sales, through April: $88.9 million
Change during that period: -1.4%
Decline in sales from 2007 to 2010: 15.9%

Special K was one of the first diet foods. It’s still a good way to start your day, nutritionally speaking. But the cereal is vying for attention in a very crowded market.

MUST HAVE BACK TO SCHOOL GADGETS (Fox News)

1. The Smartest Pen You’ll Ever Use: The Livescribe smartpen is essentially a ballpoint pen with a tiny computer, microphone and digital audio recorder. The pen records what you write on its special paper and synchronizes those notes with any audio it has recorded. To hear what a professor said when you jotted down a particular note, all you have to do is tap the note with your pen to listen to that section of the lecture again.

2. The Ultimate Alarm Clock: The Flying Alarm Clock will get you up and up on time — snooze button not included. When the alarm goes off the propeller-like top charges up and flies into the air. The only way to turn off the alarm is to jump out of bed, find the flying top and return it back to the clock base.

3. The Hottest Ereader: School textbooks don’t come cheap. The national average a student spent for books and supplies at a four-year public college in 2010-11 was $1,137. A Kindle, Amazon’s wireless reading device, is a smart and practical purchase for just $139. The Amazon Kindle comes with a free built-in 3G connection that allows you to download thousands of books from Amazon.com. Kindles are used just like any regular textbook in that students can make bookmarks, highlight and make notes on text.

4. A Smorgasbord of Apps for That New Tablet: Although smaller than bulky laptops, tablets still offer just as many applications and features. For example, the FlashCards Plus app lets you do away with stacks of paper index cards. With this app you can quiz yourself by creating fill-in the blank, matching, multiple choice and true/false questions on digital flash cards.

  • The Study Buddy app keeps track of your actual study and break time to help you manage your time and study sessions. And the Essay Planner app is great for student procrastinators. It creates your own “plan of attack” based on an interactive self-assessment to help quickly organize your paper when crunched for time.

5. The Ultimate Backpack: The Ultimate Laptop Backpack — which has a built-in siren and strobe light — provides students with an extra level of mobile personal security. In seconds, you can activate two high decibel sirens and a high intensity strobe light to attract immediate attention to a dangerous or harmful situation.

Mattel’s Angel: Bikini-clad Farrah Fawcett Barbie doll becomes an instant collectors’ item

Farrah Fawcett has been given a new lease of life in the unlikely guise of a Barbie doll.

Taking the favourite Charlie’s Angel star’s famed poster pose as inspiration, the Farrah Barbie wears a red swimsuit and sits against a backdrop of a striped Mexican rug.

And like the poster, the doll has been a sell-out success.

The record-breaking 1976 poster sold over ten million copies, helping to immortalise Farrah Fawcett’s trademark smile and flaxen locks – not to mention her swimsuit, which is now on display at the Smithsonian Institution.

Barbie fans have snapped up the limited edition doll, which is touted to be instantly collectable. The Farrah Barbies, made by Mattel, are completed with a gold chain and girl-next-door locks.

They went on sale in mid-July, retailing from $34.95 – and are already sold out on a number of websites, including Walmart and K-Mart. Part of the proceeds from the sales will go to the Farrah Fawcett Foundation.

Long-time friend of Ms Fawcett, Alana Stewart, said ‘We’re all very excited about it, it’s a great tribute to her and part of the proceeds go to the foundation to benefit cancer research and help people.’

The foundation was set up by Ms Fawcett two years before the actress passed away after battling with cancer.

Ms Stewart told Fox News: ‘Her aim was really to help in cutting edge research and to help people that are actually struggling with cancer now, so that’s really the mission of the foundation.

It’s really wonderful for her memory and for her legacy and for her fans.’

As well as a fundraiser, the doll is a nod to Ms Fawcett’s victory to claim the rights to the poster, for which she fought for years before her death.

‘For a long time, Farrah didn’t have rights to her poster. That went through litigation for years. Just before she passed away, she got the rights to the poster back, and it was something that she really fought for. She got it back and she was really happy about that,’ said Ms Stewart.

‘This doll is now available to her fans so she’d be very pleased about that, and very pleased that it’s helping the foundation, which is something that she set up with the intention with helping with the battle against cancer,’ she told Fox News.

It is not the first time the late actress has inspired a doll’s design. An official Farrah doll went on sale in 1977 – that time wearing a svelte white jumpsuit.

Erin & Darren talked with Sleep Country Canada Co-Founder and Chair, Christine Magee about their charity initiative ‘Pyjamas and Storybooks’.

From the Sleep Country website:

At Sleep Country, we know a good night’s sleep starts with a good bedtime. But, many Canadian children live in poverty, often without the comfort of pyjamas and bedtime stories to fuel their dreams. From August 1st to August 31st, we’ll be accepting donations of new or gently used children’s pyjamas and storybooks at any Sleep Country location in Canada to help provide children in need with a better night’s sleep. Donations will be distributed in local communities through charitable organizations like the Salvation Army. A better tomorrow starts with a better bedtime.
